Where are you from?
“I’m originally from Massachusetts. I grew up in South Hadley, MA. I’m the youngest of 8 – 7 boys and 1 girl. I went to South Hadley High School and proceeded on to college. I ended up with a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Massachusetts. I made it out to CO as soon as I graduated – my last class was over, and I was on the road.”
What brought you to the CBD industry?
“In about 2002, a good friend of mine came down with Parkinson’s. He asked me one day, ‘Can you get me some different strains of marijuana and figure out what strains are coming from where.’ So I came up with some strains that really helped him out. I never felt like we were curing Parkinson’s, but I felt like we were helping his day-to-day living, his quality fo life. And that felt good. I knew there was something good about it. Then in 2014 when the Farm Bill brought in hemp as legal in all 50 states, I knew right then that this was something that needed to be done. I dropped everything I was doing and focused on the hemp industry.”
What is Boot Ranch Farms?
“We created Boot Ranch Farms – a gentleman Tim Scully and myself. We took a couple years, and we created a quality hemp growing system. And there’s many variables, but we learned what it takes to grow quality hemp.”
What exactly is hemp?
“The definition of a hemp plant is the cannabis plant – which is marijuana or hemp. The thing that deciphers marijuana from hemp, is hemp is the cannabis plant with less than 0.3% THC.”
Why do you source your oils from small farms?
“What we’ve learned is that large industrial scale farms simply cannot produce the quality of a hemp plant that small farmers can get. So instead of expanding the farm and going into a large scale farm, I decided it was best to go out and help other small farmers create the quality that we’re looking for. And it’s back to how it should be. Small farmers are gonna give you the best quality. I feel that if they’re growing the quality that we’re looking for, we’re happy to pay the premium for their hemp.”
